Art Club - Ancient Worlds

Throughout the last term of after school art club the children took inspiration from fascinating and decorative artefacts from the ancient worlds. This included Aztecs Masks, Egyptian Amulets and finally Greek Vases.

  1. Aztec Masks

Using a selection of paper mosaic pieces the children designed their very own masks using cardboard backing and coloured paper squares. We looked at some examples of the highly decorative Aztec masks, many of which would have been made from precious stones, turquoise shell and bone for decoration.

The results were wonderfully colourful masks, full of character.

  1. Ancient Egyptian Amulets

For the second project I selected two beautiful examples of ancient Egyptian amulets. The children could then choose to create a scarab beetle or falcon.

In week one we built up the shape of the amulets using cardboard and glue. I created templates for the younger children to use.

In week two the children painted their amulets using colours that matched the gold and precious stones used in the original artefacts.

  1. Ancient Greek Vases

Taking inspirations from the distinctive terracotta vases of the ancient greeks, the class had a go at coming up with their very own designs. Using orange for the background and black to paint for the detail.
